The thin veil (bhull)

A certain part of the world is all a twitter about actress Helen Mirren wearing a red bikini. An attractive famous sixty three year old woman in a bikini can be interesting, I clicked on the daily news site to behold this wonder. Yes, there she was, she looked pretty good, then I saw other pictures of her in a Magazine, I went there, then I noticed some video ofher sans bikini, then it morphed into an outright porn site, I caught myself and stopped. I marveled at how fast I was at a porn site, it was scary. I am sixty-two and I must confess have seen a lot of naked women, but something physical, mental, and emotional was powerfully at work in me to keep me interested.

Location, location, location! (Mike Burer)

The study of antiquities is fascinating business, but it can be quite dangerous because the contemporary scholarly impetus is to fill in the gaps, often with purely hypothetical conclusions, when a wiser path would be to discuss options and then acknowledge that the present state of our knowledge is limited. Scholars tend to say more than can be definitively shown, when a more prudent path would be to present data and be conservative in conclusions.read more...

Spiritual Disciplines, the non-voluntary type (bhull)

There is an ever increasing body of writing on the subject of Spiritual Disciplines. I have contributed to the pile of new books on the subject with Choose The Life, Exploring a faith that embraces discipleship and with, [pardon the title] The Complete Book of Discipleship. This writing encourages readers to intentionally choose to follow Jesus, and part of that means engaging in the same practices he modeled. For example, prayer, fasting, silence, solitude, frugality, worship, service, and sacrifice. Practicing the intentional ones or voluntary disciplines are like preventive health care, there is not a lot of buzz about it, because it helps us avoid a lot of life's negative experience that comes from bad habits and attitudes.

What's really on the new "Dead Sea Stone"? (Craig Blomberg)

Go to http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/07/1184950.aspx and click on the links to the Hebrew and English texts of the new stone causing the stir about possibly referring to the concept of a resurrected Messiah before the time of Jesus. Look at lines 78-85, which must be what Israel Knohl is referring to. Notice what's actually in the text vs. what he has to supply. The text itself, reads merely :

And raised on the 3d day? (Scot McKnight)

Some of you may have noticed, but out of Jerusalem there is coming news of an upcoming Dead Sea Scroll meeting, the 60th anniversary meeting. The headliner of this event is the discussion, by Israel Knohl (an adventurous sort), of a stone tablet. Knohl claims the text, as he reconstructs it, could indicate a pre-Jesus Jewish belief in a messiah's resurrection on the 3d day. The messiah is a so called Simon. Much ink will be spillt on this one; keep your eyes open....

Rags to riches or riches to rags? (bhull)

Richard Foster made the keen observation that " The modern hero is the poor boy who purposefully becomes rich rather than the rich boy who voluntarily becomes poor." Isn't interesting how we try to recuse ourselves from the story of Jesus and the Rich Young Ruler?
